How Safe Do You Feel Going To Hospital To Be Cured

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Alfred_Jones] Alfred Jones There has been a lot of concern in Australia over the performance of an overseas trained Doctor that had been made Director of Surgery in a regional city. Currently there is a Commission of Inquiry into the allegations that have been made against this Doctor and in the interim report that has been released and passed to the State Government, there are serious concerns that this Doctor could face charges of Murder, because at the moment, there is evidence that at least 87 people have died as a result of surgery performed by this Doctor. The accusations are that he was performing surgery that was completely above his abilities and the facilities of the hospital concerned, all deaths are considered to be the result of botched surgery. This doctor had already been banned from performing surgery in the United States, his records were obviously not fully checked when he got the position in Australia. He has now fled the country and he is believed to be living in the United States once again. There are hundreds of people here that have been operated on by this doctor, and their life has never been the same again, a large number requiring further surgery to relieve the problems caused by previous surgery. I know that there are many good doctors and surgeons out there that do wonderful work, and millions of lives have been saved by the efforts of these great men and women. However, there is also concern about a report just released in Australia which states that on average about 50 people die per day in Australia as a result of botched surgery. Australia is considered to have a world-class health system and that doctors here are up with the best of them. What concerns me is that if we have 50 per day dying with a population of 20 millions, is this also happening in other civilized nations with a greater population, It does not say much for world health. If you have any doubts about the doctor that has fled the country, just look in any search engine for Doctor Jayant Patel. The local Police Chief of Jamnagar, the town in India, where this doctor originated, states in a Newspaper, This is very big news in Australia where life has more value, but it is of less interest here. I think thats sums up the story very well; I am just very pleased that I am not living there. Your Garden – Growing from Seed

By Michael Russell With all the plants available on the market these days, both from garden centres and mail order, you might wonder why anyone would bother to grow from seed. There are a few answers to this one but some of the basic ones are: Personal satisfaction – theres nothing quite like seeing a garden full of plants that you grew yourself from a tiny seed. Cost – if you have a large garden and want it full of bright flowers for the summer then the cheapest way is to grow your own bedding plants. Choice – garden centres are great but in reality, they cant stock a fraction of the varieties available from specialist nurseries. So if you fancy giving it a try, even if only in a small way, then this is what you will need to get started with seeds that need propagation indoors before planting out: Seed trays, pots (or old margarine tubs, if you like, but trays are best). If you have a greenhouse or potting shed then those with drainage holes in the bottom are fine but if youre propagating your seeds on a windowsill then youll be better off with the sort without drainage holes. Seed tray covers. These arent strictly necessary but they do help to keep warmth and moisture in during the propagation period and it saves messing around with plastic bags or film. Potting compost. Do buy compost especially for seeds. All purpose compost is inclined to be a bit coarse for really tiny seeds. Somewhere fairly constantly warm for germination (around 70F, 20C). If you want to grow your seeds in a greenhouse, you may need to consider heating it. Otherwise, an indoor windowsill should be alright or if you dont think that yours is warm enough, you can buy heated propagators or heated mats to put underneath seed trays. Labels to stick on or in each pot or tray so that you know whats in it. Before you even open the seed packets, check the instructions. Some seeds need to be soaked, frozen or treated in some other way before use. In general, one seed tray will accommodate one packet of seeds. Some, more specialised seeds come in much smaller quantities and a half size tray or a pot will be adequate. Fill your container with compost to within about inch from the top then dampen it. I find that a spray bottle is ideal for this. You dont want the compost absolutely soaking wet or your seeds will rot. Either sprinkle the seeds all over the surface of your compost or make drills one inch apart with a pencil or your finger and sprinkle the seeds evenly into these. For larger seeds, you may need to make a small hole and drop each seed in individually. According to the instructions, either cover your seeds gently with more compost or leave exposed. Dampen your compost again with the spray or a very fine trickle of water and unless it says otherwise on the packet, make some sort of mini greenhouse for your container. You can put plastic film over the top or put the whole tray into a clear plastic bag. For pots, you can slip a plastic bag over the top and hold in place with elastic bands. Put your trays etc. in the aforesaid warm place, but not in direct sunlight, and wait for your seeds to grow. Depending on what they are, this could be days or weeks – it will usually tell you on the packet. In the meantime, check daily for sufficient water. If the plastic covering has water droplets inside you can be fairly sure that your compost is moist enough. If in doubt, feel gently with your finger. The soil should be damp, not wet! When your seedlings start to appear and have grown a very tiny bit (not much more than inch), remove the plastic covering. From this point on, you will need to be even more vigilant that your trays dont dry out. I still advocate using the spray bottle for watering tiny seedlings – but be very careful, they will be fragile. If you are using draining trays or peat trays, you can water from the bottom if you prefer. When your seedlings have developed 4 or 6 leaves and look a bit sturdier, you must thin them out to about one inch apart, in trays or pots. Prepare fresh trays or pots of compost – the next one on from seed compost. Separate the seedlings, using the tip of a pencil or the handle of a teaspoon to loosen them from the tray or pot. You must treat them with the utmost care as they are easily damaged at this stage. Gently tease the roots apart and try to only hold the leaves rather than the stems. Make holes in your newly-prepared compost and pop each seedling into a hole, gently firming down the soil around them. Some seedlings react very badly to transplanting and may look as though they are dying. Fear not, after a day or so, if they are kept moist and out of direct sunlight, they will be fine. The new plants can now stay in these trays or pots until you are ready to put them into the ground or their outdoor containers. Keep them moist and give a little liquid feed at weekly intervals. If the plants look as though they are getting leggy, they dont have enough light and must be moved. Seed planting is usually done early in the year (check packet for details). When the plants look quite sturdy and the weather has warmed up in spring, you can put your plants outside during the day to harden off. Make sure they are sheltered from heavy rain or wind. While the nights are still cold or there is a danger of frost, you will need to bring the plants in at the end of the day. Make sure that slugs and snails cant reach your new babies – a hungry slug can eliminate all your hard work at a sitting. When all danger of frost has passed, you can put your plants in their permanent homes in your garden. If you dont fancy all that fiddling around, there are a number of plants which can be sown from seed direct into the garden. To do this, make sure that the soil is a fine tilthe, sow your seeds in rows or clumps and cover with a little soil. Water sparingly and when they have germinated and grown on a little, thin them out to whatever distance apart it says on the packet by discarding the weakest looking seedlings. Whichever method you choose, you should have a lovely bright garden for the summer. ——————————————————- Michael Russell Your Independent guide to Gardening ——————————————————- Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Michael_Russell http://EzineArticles.com/?Your-Garden—Growing-from-Seed&id=115911 bad credit free guaranteed loan personal no faxing savings account payday loans bad credit no fee no credit check no money down car loans for people with terrible credit

Weight Loss Tips- Healthy Eating Starts at Home

By Jessica Heller, DC, CSCS In the quest to lose weight, it is often too easy to get involved in difficult, hard-to-keep- track-of diet plans, and overlook the simple steps you can take in your life to eat healthier, and consequently, lose weight. There are many simple steps you can take at home to allow you and your family to eat better. The most important change most Americans need to keep in mind is to eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains (grains that are minimally processed or refined.) I know what youre thinking: I dont have time to cook. I have two things to say to that. First, there are quick and easy cooking methods, such as stir-frying, grilling, and making salads, that take less than 15 minutes to do. Second, if you dont have time to cook, maybe you have too much going on in your life, and it is time to take stock of your priorities. Plan meals and shopping lists ahead of time, cook ahead on weekends and freeze meals, ask your children to help prepare meals, decrease the amount of activities in your familys life so you can have time to sit down to a meal, etc. Your health is important enough to take the time to eat right! That said, there are easy ways to get more fresh, healthy foods on the table. Start simple. Your first goal should be to eat three meals per day. Next, have one more serving of fruit per day than you do now. Keep fresh, whole fruits washed and on the dining room table, so they are easy to grab snacks. Next, try to start with vegetables by serving them two or three times a week. (Eventually, you should be eating two vegetables with dinner and limiting all starchy carbohydrate side dishes, but start with an easy goal first.) Also, prepare your own trail mix snacks with nuts, raisins, and dried fruit that are easy to keep in the car for on-the-go snacking. After these three suggestions become habit, you can try these next steps. First, do not serve any form of fried potatoes anymore. Serve only baked potatoes, and with low-fat plain yogurt instead of sour cream. Add in fish for dinner twice a week. Try at least one vegetarian meal per week. Add a salad to each dinner. Also, throw out any sugared, processed cereals and replace them with only high-fiber, low sugar cereals for your breakfasts. You should now be three to six months into your healthy lifestyle changes. Finally, switch from white bread to whole wheat. Pack vegetables to take to work every other day. Drink water with meals, instead of juice or soda. Take your children to the health food store or farmers market to pick out vegetables and other healthy foods. Throw out all high-calorie foods in the houseif they arent there, you wont eat them. There are three other easy to remember rules of thumb you can incorporate into your healthy strategy. First, if it comes in a bag or a box, it is probably not healthy for you. Secondly, fresh, healthy foods have the ability to rot. If it can stay on the shelf or in the pantry for eons without spoiling, it is not a healthy food. Third, stick to the perimeter of the store when shopping. The healthiest foods are on the outside, in the produce, refrigerated, and meat sections. The pre-packaged, canned, and prepared foods in the inner aisles are generally unhealthy. So, in six to twelve months, you have made these healthy changes in your familys eating habits: Three healthy meals each day.A salad and two vegetables with each dinner, daily. Very limited starches/carbohydrates.Fruits and vegetables as snacks at least twice per day.Fish twice per week, and a meatless dinner once per week.No juice or soda consumption.Healthier food purchasing and preparation habits. Best of all, you have managed to do this without counting a calorie, calculating a carb, or going on any sort of diet. I am sure the pounds are dropping and your clothes are fitting better. You are also teaching your children healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime. Healthy eating is a lifestyle change. Keep up the good work. References: Baker, Larry C. Picking Your Game Plan. Estimating The True Total Cost Of Gastric Bypass Surgery

By Donald Saunders Gastric bypass surgery can be expensive and one problem for many people is that they embark on this particular road knowing the baseline cost but overlook the fact that for a whole variety of reasons, often outside of their control, the true total cost by the time they are finished can be a great deal higher. The first thing that you need to consider is that gastric bypass surgery consists of more than simply the operation itself. In most cases there will be extensive pre-operative counseling and many surgical centers will require you to undergo a pre-treatment program before they will approve your surgery. In addition, most patients will need follow-up dietary and nutritional counseling. Both of these items can add significantly to the overall cost of weight loss surgery. The second thing to consider is the risk of complications which may require further surgery or additional hospital or outpatient treatment. Most gastric bypass surgery patients will experience a range of complications which will vary from a number of minor problems which are easily resolved to serious complications which require a return to the operating theatre and a further stay in hospital for perhaps several days. Complications can add very considerably to the price of surgery and can even result in a doubling of cost, or more. The third consideration is whether or not your insurance company will meet your costs. Fortunately, an increasing number of insurance companies are covering obesity surgery today but there are still many policies which explicitly exclude such procedures. In addition, where a policy does cover surgery, you may find that there a number of very strict conditions detailing just what they will and what will not pay for. A policy may for example limit cover to the cost of only certain types of surgery (such as the Roux-en-Y procedure) but not cover anything other than the cost of the operation itself. Your surgical center will normally be able to give you advice on insurance cover and even contact your insurance company for you to ascertain whether or not the insurance company will approve a claim for your proposed surgery. You should however look on this as simply advice and protect yourself against possible problems at a later date by contacting your insurance company yourself in writing and establishing the position in advance of any treatment. In particular, you should ascertain the full extent of your cover, including pre and post-operative cover and your standing in the event of complications. Although your baseline cost can range typically from about $15,000 to $35,000 depending upon the type of surgery you are contemplating and where surgery is to be carried out, the final true cost of gastric bypass surgery is likely to be quite a bit higher. So, do your homework and don’t elect for surgery until you are happy with the possible final price you may have to pay. Manic Depression: Tips to Turn Frowns and Tears into Smiles and Laughter

By Matt OConnor You could be suffering from manic depression without even knowing it. Even if your mood swings don’t resemble the actions of a pendulum, actions of extreme opposites are sufficient evidence to prove that youre suffering from manic depression. If you believe that youre suffering from this disorder, it’s important to get help immediately and prevent it from affecting your life in a more significant way. How to Handle Manic Depression Also known as bipolar disorder, manic depression may be inherited and is usually serious and persistent. As mentioned earlier, not all people suffering from bipolar depression would have violent mood swings. In some cases, the transition from depression to mania or elation is gradual. Regardless of that, its imperative that proper medical attention is given immediately to the affected individual to prevent the disorder from worsening. COOPERATE FULLY WITH YOUR DOCTOR. This is not the time to feel ashamed about your condition. It’s not your fault if you happen to suffer from manic depression. You should also understand that your doctor is there to help you and nothing else. If you dont give your complete trust to your doctor, the treatment for your condition is most probably not as effective as its meant to be. KEEP A CHART OF ACTIONS AND EVENTS RELATED TO YOUR CONDITION. Take note of the dates and times when symptoms of manic depression have occurred. Keeping a chart would not only help you understand the seriousness of your condition but it could also show you a trend that you were once unaware of. Awareness of this trend will better enable you to identify when youre once again starting to experience the effects of manic depression. NEVER TAKE ANY MEDICATION FOR MANIC DEPRESSION WITHOUT A GO-AHEAD FROM YOUR DOCTOR. Although your desire to be cured is entirely understandable, that doesnt mean it should overrule common sense. Dabbling with drugs that you dont fully comprehend can lead to serious medical complications. If you dont think your present medication is effective, relay your feelings to your psychiatrist and he will no doubt see to it that your medication is immediately changed. Speaking of medication, mood stabilizers are one of the most common forms of drugs prescribed for people suffering from manic depression. With the consumption of mood stabilizers, there is less chance for manic depression to recur. Lithium is the first type of mood stabilizer used for treating manic depression. Anticonvulsant medications like valproate are conversely used to treat the more serious cases of manic depression. Its possible for a doctor to prescribe both anticonvulsant medication and lithium for manic depression patients. WHEN A PSYCHIATRIC TREATMENT HAS BEEN PRESCRIBED FOR YOU, FOLLOW THIS RIGOROUSLY. Having on-and-off treatment will only give you a temporary cure from manic depression. Prioritize your therapy sessions as its the only way for you to get better. DONT KEEP SECRETS. If something new comes up and it seems to be related to your condition, inform your doctor immediately. Failing to do so could lead to more suffering in the future. TAKE NOTE OF SIDE EFFECTS. Certain medications for manic depression may make you gain weight, feel weak or nauseous, and even lose hair. If your medication has any side effect that bothers you, inform your doctor about it so he can change your treatment accordingly. Lastly, dont hide your condition from your loved ones. Even if you dont have a doctor for a parent or partner, youll be amazed at the amount of help they can give just by providing you comfort and emotional support. Did you know 16% of the world’s population suffer from depression? Author Matthew OConnor runs a site dedicated to the latest news and developments in manic depression. Warning! Marriage Counseling Can Be Very Dangerous for Your Relationship

By Jeff Herring Q: My wife wants us to go to marriage counseling. I’m not so sure it’s a good thing. Many of my friends have gone, and all they did was fight more and get divorced. I don’t want a divorce, and neither does she. What should I do? A. If your wife wants you to go to marriage counseling with her, by all means, go. It’s much less expensive than divorce, and when done right it can save your marriage and even make it better. There is some thinking that traditional marriage counseling can be dangerous to your marital health. In a 1999 presentation to the SmartMarriages Conference, entitled “How Therapy Can Be Hazardous to Your Marital Health” William Doherty pointed out that “according to a national survey, 80 percent of all private practice therapists in the U.S. say they do marital therapy. And only 12 percent of them are in a profession that requires even one course or any supervised experience.” His point was that most therapist are trained to help individual focus on themselves and their own growth. This is good to a point of course. But if overdone, you can focus on yourself at the expense of the marriage. So here are some questions to ask a potential therapist: 1. What is your attitude toward salvaging a marriage versus helping couples break up? If the therapist claims neutrality or to help people not marriages, run. 2. What is your background and training in couples therapy? If the therapist is self caught or workshop trained and can’t point to a significan education in this work, consider going to someone else. 3. I would also ask if the therapist has ever been through therapy. I believe that if you are going to do it, you need to have been through it. You can read the entire transcript of Doherty’s speech at SmartMarriages.org The bottom line is: Yes, go to marriage counseling with yor wife, but go with your head up, knowing what you are getting into. The Wedding Invitations Reflects The First Impression About Your Wedding

By Alma Lazarevich Finally, the big day is getting closer. You are only a few months away from your wedding and every detail counts. Of course, you want a gorgeous bridal gown, the most beautiful flower arrangements, a simply exquisite cake and the list seems to be endless, but, have you ever thought that the first impression of a beautiful wedding will be reflected through your invitations? You obviously wish things would be simpler, you wish you could go back to those days when wedding announcements were just that, something pretty, nothing special, but the truth is, times have changed. Its unbelievable how many hundreds of styles and choices there are: from a simple cute plain card, to the most sophisticated embossed, big size invitation with double hard and soft embossed envelopes monogram seals covered with gold or silver leaf monogram seals over a sheet of thin wood painted with powder of mother pearl, surrounded by a string of pearls doubled panel cards with sheer satin windows all kinds of hand made papers all kinds of imported papers from Italy, Holland, France, India, Mexico, Philippines. And regarding accents, what about those beautiful satin or silk ribbons to enhance the beauty of an invitation? But, wait a minute. Did I say ribbons? Watch out bridesalways keep in mind that there are two persons involved in the wedding announcements, the bride and the groom. Ribbons are very romantic, but try to be conservative regarding bows; you dont want your invitation to look feminine with a bow that takes the focus away from the announcement. When you select ribbons, make sure that they will be very discreet and still will look pretty but not too feminine, think about the groom also and make sure that he also will feel proud rather than embarrassed of his wedding invitations. As I mentioned before, there are hundreds of styles to choose from, remember that you have a great advantage when you deal directly with a designer instead of ordering from a catalog, because the designer will have a lot of suggestions regarding what you both as a couple would like and will try to make something personalized, something very special for you both. Research Your Idea – Do Your Homework

By Katheryn Hoban The planning and testing stage is the time to research your ideas to figure out if there really is a market for your product. Too many newbies start out with an idea that they think it is brilliant, and it may well be brilliant. But you have to test and research to see just what is the interest or demand that your product might generate. How can you do your homework on something that is new? First you have to take a look around the market to see if there is something similar. Is it being used in a similar fashion? How is it selling? Is it a good product? What is the selling point? What are the short comings of that similar product and how can you improve on it? If there is nothing like what you are proposing out there you have to research in other ways. Many times an idea for new products are market specific so the first question to answer is who are going to be your buyers? Once you determine that niche market then its time to focus your attention on what those buyers want? How do you do that? Ask questions. There are a couple of ways that you can do that. Get out of your car and walk into your buyers places of business and ask them. Would you use this product if one existed? What would you like to see as some features? What is missing from a similar type product that you have bought in the past? Or call them up and ask them to take a small survey. Another way to get answers is to design a mock up or prototype of the product that you are thinking of marketing and ask your buyers to use it and to give you good and bad feedback. You could set up a focus group and pay people who have expertise in that product area to come in and give you their opinions. You could also pay everyday consumers to come in and use the products or give their opinions of what they think of the proposed product or services. Be prepared though because people will be brutally honest. Once you have those answers now is the time either to kill the idea or make improvements on it and test again. Once in a while you hit upon a brilliant idea and there is no need for improvement so the next thing in that case is to stock up and sell to those buyers that want to snatch it up as soon as you offer it!! In most cases you have to redesign, re-test and create a second and third prototype to get the absolute best product to the market. This is where most entrepreneurs will spend their money. This is also where most good ideas fall off by the wayside. It can take money to get your product just right so that it will be easily bought and distributed. Many new business owners dont have the capital needed to make an idea fly, to revamp a good idea or make it marketable. This is where it takes grit to pass a product into the next phase. The idea, testing and marketing phase can be costly but it is worth it to know the pull of your product. Hold onto your vision and take those calculated risks on blockbuster ideas and drop the ideas that only tested so so. When you have one of those explosive ideas you have to believe in it so strongly that you are willing to put everything on the line to make it become a reality. Test each phase and each step. Go to your buyers and ask them. Last step is to create a big launch event to bring your product into the public and to create a buyers frenzy that your product is something that they have to get their hands on. Lots of people, lots of attention, lots of buying and selling is what you will be looking to create. Hopefully your testing stage has paid off and you will start seeing a profit.
